In Memory

Liz Kirn (Brozell)

It is with a heavy, heavy heart that I announce my dear friend's passing last night, August 6, 2021. Liz had battled cancer and, unfortunately it returned.  She was my lifelong friend...a beautiful soul, a dancer, artist and encourager. I will miss her greatly. Rest in peace, my cherished friend.

Liz's Obituary:

Elizabeth (Liz) Ann Brozell, loving wife, generous sister, extremely proud mother, and gifted artist passed away suddenly in San Francisco on August 6, 2021 due to complications from a recurrence of cancer.

Liz was born with the soul of an artist although it wasn't until later in life that she discovered her gift for painting. In her own words, "I discovered line and movement when pursuing a career as a professional ballet dancer, and these elements infuse my work as an artist. I am self-taught, so bring an idiosyncratic style to my art.  Oftentimes, my work is both intensely personal and universal."

Liz took up figurative oil painting at 40 years old with a fervor and was a strong presence in the artistic community at G Studio in Napa and at her ICB studio in Sausalito.  While Liz was self-taught, she was mentored by her dear friend, Margaret Kean.  Liz won many prizes for her art, and sold many paintings to collectors over the years.  Most recently, her art was displayed in group shows at Studio Gallery in San Francisco, Axis Gallery in Sacramento, The O’Hanlon Center for The Arts in Mill Valley, and UGallery online. She frequently was invited to show her art at festivals in Beverly Hills, Sausalito, La Jolla, and at Ft. Mason in San Francisco, among many other venues.  Some of her art can be viewed at www.lizbrozell.com .

Liz loved classical music and danced her entire life. She danced with the Pennsylvania Ballet and the Oakland Ballet.  Liz took ballet classes until recently, and incorporated class scenes into her paintings, creating some of her most poignant works.

Elizabeth Ann Kirn was born July 27, 1954 and spent her childhood in Los Altos California. She was named after her mother Nancy’s beloved older sister, Elizabeth Ann Turner, nee Tufel.

Liz married her first husband, Dr. Douglas Brozell, in 1978 in Philadelphia and together they had three children: Adrian, Alec, and Ariel.  She was an enthusiastic mother whose love of children spread beyond her own.  While raising her children in Napa, she found time to help others working at Child Protective Services, New Tech High School, and the foster youth non-profit, Voices.

She remarried, to Mark Rowen, in April, 2018, in San Francisco and, with grandchildren coming, had some of the better years of her life.  Liz is survived by her devoted husband, Mark, three children, daughters-in-law Erika and Jordan and son-in-law Craig, grandchildren Tenley, Arabella, Franklin, Harlow and Cora, and three siblings, David, Andrew and Timothy.

In lieu of flowers donations to LymeLight foundation are encouraged.

Dear Betsy,

Thank you so much for your kind words. Yes, Liz was an exceptional painter even though she started later in life. She was recently married and enjoying her grandchildren and dogs...so tragic and sudden. I am very fortunate to have a friend like her. heart

Wendy

I remember Liz being an amazing dancer and always kind.  I'm so sorry for your loss Wendy and sad for her family and friends.   It is hard for me to comprehend we are at an age where we have lost so many.

i don't think i knew liz...but it's nice to see everyone's heartfelt comments.

funny how 49 years goes by when you're busy doing something else.

i remember high school like it was yesterday.

eerie to see how many in the deceased section.

i have distinct memories of most of them.

sending good wishes to all.

Really sorry to see this - wish she could have made it to the reunion. I knew she was a great dancer, but to see her art later on, it's beautiful. My parents knew her parents very well and they would have dinners together.
